Kongsvinger, 2010

This work was made for an exhibition which had war as its theme at Kongsvingers fortress. For a few days in April 2010, I recorded all of CNN’s war reporting on Afghanistan and Iraq. I perceived the recorded material in many ways close to propaganda and it had absurd elements of almost comical character.

When you entered the room, you could see a photo of a city skyline hung on the wall. With closer inspection, you would see that it was possible to look through one of the windows within the photograph. Behind the window itself, there was a figure taking a footbath and smoking a cigarette. How it was done, the movie with the figure looked completely 3-dimensional. On the other side of the room there was a TV showing CNN news from Afghanistan and Iraq. The news showed what the soldiers ate, how soldiers danced to Lady Gaga, Taliban training camps and so on. In the middle of the room there was a boombox. After a while, the figure got up and turned on the stereo and the speakers lit up in neon and where then the song “Kill for Peace” was played at a high volume. After a while, the figure returned to the footbath. The scene repeated itself over and over again.
